March 2012. After the first interview in June, I talked with Safouan about his current work which is in two parts – the theory of sexuality and the history of the Freudian and Lacanian institutions. He told me that he was reading more than 12 hours a day. I was astonished and I told him that I was happy if I read for 5 or 6 hours. “But", said Safouan, "you don’t have my motivation. I need to find out if I’ve been an idiot all my life.” This March, after we had corrected some spellings in the text, he said that there was only one thing that he wished to add to it – prompted by a re-reading of Popper. “Both Freud and Lacan confounded truth with knowledge. Instead of letting the knowledge they had discovered be further examined, they had deemed it a truth with which they identified.”
